Details:
  • Over excitation conditions are limited to a safe period by a protection circuit within the AVR. 
  • Provision is made for the connection of a remote voltage trimmer, allowing the user fine control of the generator's output.
  • An analogue input is provided allowing connection to the Power Factor controller or other external devices with compatible output.
  • The AVR has the facility for droop CT connection, to allow parallel running with other similarly equipped generators. 
  • Potential Divider and Rectifier takes a proportion of the generator output voltage and attenuates it. The potential divider is adjustable by the AVR Volts potentiometer and external hand trimmer (when fitted). The output from the droop CT is also added to this signal. A rectifier converts  the a.c. input signal into d.c. for further processing. The DC Mixer adds the Analogue input signal the Sensing signal.
  • The Amplifier (Amp) compares the sensing voltage to the Reference Voltage and amplifies the difference (error) to provide a controlling signal for the power devices. The Ramp Generator and Level Detector and Driver infinitely control the conduction period of the Power Control Devices and hence provides the excitation system with the required power to maintain the generator voltage within specified limits.
  • The Stability Circuit provides adjustable negative ac feedback to ensure good steady state and transient performance of the control system.
  • The Low Hz Detector measures the period of each electrical cycle and causes the reference voltage to be reduced approximately linearly with speed below a presettable threshold. A Light Emitting Diode gives indication of underspeed running.
  • The Synchronising circuit is used to keep the Ramp Generator and Low Hz Detector locked to the generator waveform period.
  • The Low Pass Filter prevents distorted waveforms affecting the operation of the AVR control circuit. The Short Circuit Detector senses the presence of a short circuit on the generator output and forces the Power Control Devices into full conduction. This only occurs when the AVR is powered from an auxiliary winding.
  • Power Control Devices vary the amount of exciter field current in response to the error signal produced by the Amplifier.
  • Suppression components are included to prevent sub cycle voltage spikes damaging the AVR components and also to reduce the amount of conducted noise on the generator terminals.
  • The Over Excitation Detector continuously monitors the exciter field voltage and provides signals, to collapse the output voltage if an over excitation condition persists for the specified time period. The Power Supply provides the required voltages for the AVR circuitry.
  • A frequency measuring circuit continually monitors the generator output and provides under-speed protection of the excitation system, by reducing the output voltage proportionally with speed below a pre-settable threshold. A manual adjustment is provided for factory setting of the under frequency roll off point, (UFRO). This can easily be changed to 50 or 60 Hz in the field by push-on link selection.
  • The AVR voltage sensing terminals continuously sample the output windings for voltage control purposes. In response to this sample voltage, the AVR controls the power fed to the exciter field, and hence the main field, to maintain the machine output voltage within the specified limits, compensating for load, speed, temperature and power factor, of the generator. 
  • Positive voltage build up from residual levels is ensured by the use of efficient semiconductors in the power circuitry of the AVR. The power and voltage sensing circuits have separate terminals, allowing the excitation power to be derived directly from the stator winding for basic applications.

Details: MX341 is a two phase sensed Automatic Voltage Regulator and forms part of the excitation system for a brush-less generator. Excitation power is derived from a  three-phase permanent magnet generator (PMG), to isolate the AVR control circuits from the effects of nonlinear loads and to reduce radio frequency interference on the generator terminals. Sustained generator short circuit current is another feature of the PMG system. The AVR senses the voltage in the main generator winding and controls the power fed to the exciter stator and hence the main rotor to maintain the generator output voltage within the specified limits, compensating for load, speed, temperature and power factor of the generator. Soft start circuitry is included to provide a smooth controlled build up of generator output voltage. A frequency measuring circuit continually monitors the shaft speed of the generator and provides under-speed protection of the excitation system by reducing the generator output voltage proportionally with speed below a pre-settable threshold. A further enhancement of this feature is an adjustable volts per Hertz slope to improve engine recovery time on turbo charged engines. Soft start circuitry is included to provide a smooth controlled build up of generator output voltage. Uncontrolled excitation is limited to a safe period by internal shutdown of the AVR output device. This condition remains latched until the generator has stopped.  Provision is made for the connection of a remote voltage trimmer, allowing the user fine control of the generator's output. An analogue input is provided allowing connection to a Newage Power Factor controller or other external devices with compatible output. The AVR has the facility for droop CT connection, to allow parallel running with other similarly equipped generators.  Potential Divider and Rectifier takes a proportion of the generator output voltage and attenuates it. The potential divider is adjustable by the AVR Volts potentiometer and external hand trimmer (when fitted). The output from the droop CT is also added to this signal. An isolating transformer is included allowing connection to various winding configurations. A rectifier converts the a.c. input signal into d.c. for further processing.  The DC Mixer adds the Analogue input signal the Sensing signal. The Amplifier (Amp) compares the sensing voltage to the Reference Voltage and amplifies the difference (error) to provide a controlling signal for the power devices. The Ramp Generator and Level Detector and Driver infinitely control the conduction period of the Power Control Devices, and hence provide the excitation system with the required power to maintain the generator voltage within specified limits. The Stability Circuit provides adjustable negative ac feedback to ensure good steady state and transient performance of the control system. The Low Hz Detector measures the period of each electrical cycle and causes the reference voltage to be reduced approximately linearly with speed below a presettable threshold. A Light Emitting Diode gives indication of underspeed running. A further enhancement of this feature is the variable DIP adjustment, which provides greater voltage roll off to aid the recovery of turbo charge engines taking large impact loads. The Synchronising circuit is used to keep the Ramp Generator and Low Hz Detector locked to the Permanent Magnet Generator waveform period. Power Control Devices vary the amount of exciter field current in response to the error signal produced by the Amplifier.  The Over Excitation Detector continuously monitors the exciter field voltage and provides signals, to shut down the power device if an over excitation condition persists for the specified time period.

In response to this sample voltage, the AVR controls the power fed to the exciter field,  and hence the main field, to maintain the machine output voltage within the specified limits, compensating for load, speed, temperature and power factor of the generator. A frequency measuring circuit continually monitors the generator output and provides output under-speed protection of the excitation system, by reducing the output voltage proportionally with speed below a pre-settable threshold. A manual adjustment is provided for factory setting of the under frequency roll off point, (UFRO). This can easily be changed to 50 or 60 Hz in the field by pushon link selection. Provision is made for the connection of a remote voltage trimmer, allowing the user fine control of the generator's output. Potential Divider and Rectifier takes a proportion of the generator output voltage and attenuates it. This input chain of resistors includes the range potentiometer and hand trimmer which adjust the generator voltage. A rectifier converts the a.c. into d.c. for further processing. 
  • The Amplifier (Amp) compares the sensing voltage to the Reference Voltage and amplifies the difference (error) to provide a controlling signal for the power devices. The Ramp Generator and Level Detector and Driver infinitely control the conduction period of the Power Control Devices and hence provides the excitation system with the required power to maintain the generator voltage within specified limits.

  • Suppression components are included to prevent sub cycle voltage spikes damaging the AVR components and also to reduce the amount of conducted noise on the generator terminals.  The Power Supply provides the required voltages for the AVR circuitry. 
  • The generator output voltage is set at the factory, but can be altered by careful adjustment of the VOLTS control on the AVR board, or by the external hand trimmer if fitted. Terminals 1 and 2 on the AVR will be fitted with a shorting link if no hand trimmer is required. Terminals 3 and 4 are linked only for special low voltage applications. 
  • The AVR includes a stability or damping circuit to provide good steady state and transient performance of the generator.
  • The correct setting can be found by running the generator at no load and slowly turning the stability control.

  • The MX321TM analogue, 3-phase sensing, permanent magnet generator (PMG) powered automatic voltage regulator (AVR) provides isolation from the effects of non-linear loads, improved motor starting performance and sustained short circuit current.
  • The MX321TM AVR is provided as standard for the STAMFORD® S6 and HC6 alternators and can also be provided as an option across the STAMFORD® range. To ensure your MX321TM AVR is genuine, purchase it from an authorised NEWAGE® | STAMFORD® | AvK® dealer.
  • MX321™ is a three phase sensed Automatic Voltage Regulator and forms part of the excitation system for a brush-less generator. Excitation power is derived from a three-phase permanent magnet generator (PMG), to isolate the AVR control circuits from the effects of non-linear loads and to reduce radio frequency interference on the generator terminals. Sustained generator short circuit current is another feature of the PMG system.
  • The AVR senses the voltage in the main generator winding and controls the excitation to maintain the generator output voltage within the specified limits, compensating for load, speed, temperature and power factor of the generator. Three phase RMS sensing is employed for superior voltage regulation.
  • Adjustable Soft start circuitry is included to provide a smooth controlled build up of generator output voltage. A frequency measuring circuit continually monitors the shaft speed of the generator and provides under-speed protection of the excitation system by reducing the generator output voltage proportionally with speed below a pre-settable threshold.   • Sustained Short Circuit: With PMG or Auxiliary Winding Excitation; gives the alternator a current ‘forcing’ capability to ensure accurate circuit breaker activation in a fault situation. 
  • Stator Current Limiting: With an additional CT, stator current can be limited during an overload situation, such as starting a large motor, or in a short circuit condition. This helps the prime mover with recovery following load application, or limits fault current contribution, allowing smaller circuit breakers.
  • Over Voltage Protection: Prevents alternator damage if the voltage exceeds a pre-set limit, such as with a grid connected application.
  • Under Frequency Protection: Prevents alternator damage if the frequency, or speed, drops below a pre-set threshold. A sustained Generating Set engine overload may cause this. ) UFRO: Under Frequency Roll Off is effectively the same as 8), above. However, the roll off “Knee Point” is adjustable and can be set to allow assistance to the prime mover during load acceptance.
  • Linear V/Hz Slope: This capability allows the alternator terminal voltage to decrease or increase at a level directly proportional to speed (Hz). Useful for variable speed applications.
  • Voltage Matching: Equalises the alternator’s terminal voltage with other synchronised alternators, or power grid, connected in parallel. Less sophisticated Generating Set synchronising equipment can be utilised.
  • P.F. & VAR Regulation: Suitable for grid connected applications, where the grid voltage cannot be controlled by the alternator and therefore, regulation is achieved by control of Reactive current, i.e. Var. Allows a less sophisticated Generating Set controller to beutilised. Over-Exc. Protection: Prevents alternator damage if the pre-set maximum excitation levels of current are exceeded.
  • Under-Exc. Protection: Prevents alternator damage, caused by possible pole-slipping, if pre-set minimum excitation levels of current are exceeded.
  • Excitation Isolation: By switching the excitation off it is possible to “soft start” loads such as large motors and transformers without high levels of inrush current.
  • Power Stabilisation: Improves the stability of the alternator over the highest possible operation range. Particularly useful for grid connect applications requiring Grid Code compliance.
  • Excitation CB: MCB for use as a switch when excitation isolation is required.
  • Diode Failure Detection: By sensing the level of ripple current in the exciter output it is able to provide an indication of a failed diode, either short or open circuit. Enabling an alarm or shutdown to occur, depending on the Generating Set control methodology.
